Recorded in three days during a European tour, and sensitively mixed by the electro producer Grant Phabao, Ela Lia is the second international release by Malagasy musician Damily, the young tsapiky guitar hero. The genre was created in the late 60s by newly urbanised musicians in Tulear who adapted rhythms played at rural dances, mixing them with the African styles in vogue in south-western Madagascar, beamed in via radio from the neighbouring continent. Tsapiky became the most popular sound across the region, its upbeat trance tempo and trademark rapid-fire guitar could well gather more fans around the world thanks to this new release by one of the country’s leading names.
